World Environment Day is a celebration of Earth’s natural resources that takes place on June 5th. One of the themes of World Environment Day is the importance of environmental preservation worldwide. Popular World Environment Day activities include everything from organizing awareness walks to planting trees. Participants in the World Environment Day activities are very much trying to help the environment directly and indirectly by changing global attitudes about natural resources.
World Ocean’s Day is held on the eighth of June, and it’s a variation on the same theme as World Environment Day. World Ocean’s Day is about consciousness-raising and getting people thinking about the importance of oceans.
There is already a powerful presence in Costa Rica for both these days. On a national scale, Costa Rica has one of the smallest ecological footprints in the world. Costa Rica is famous for its biodiversity, so it’s no surprise that the World Environment Day and World Ocean’s Day celebrations have so much resonance there.
There was a popular World Ocean’s Day 2012 event at the Marino Ballena National Park. People made ocean conservation pledges and organized outdoor clean-ups. Both World Environment Day and World Ocean’s Day are part of a broader trend toward increased environmental awareness around the world.
