Costa Rica celebrates Father’s Day on the third Sunday of June and the locals celebrate the day with plenty of enthusiasm. Children, who for one reason or another, cannot be with their fathers on a day to day basis, make a special effort to travel home to reunite with the family on Father’s Day.
On Father’s Day, children pay back their dad by spoiling him. They put his favorite food on the table, give him cards and flowers, and surprise him with little trinkets. Others take dad to a restaurant where many businesses cater to making dad feel special.
After a special lunch or dinner, it’s time for a little recreation. Fathers are whisked off to a bar for a refreshing drink, to a concert or resort, to the water for some fishing or canoeing, or for a hike through the National Park.
For most families, Father Day ends with a party. And if you’re not familiar with Costa Rican parties, you’re in for a treat. The music, the costumes, the dancing … nobody does it better than the Costa Ricans.
