Manuel Antonio is a fun destination for food-lovers and those who love to cook with fresh and rare ingredients. When you enjoy a vacation in a Manual Antonio Vacation Rental, you get your own full kitchen to cook in. Some of our rentals include a gourmet chef. So, if you chose to opt for a cozy meal in instead of dining out on the town in one of Manuel Antonio’s fascinating restaurants – we’ve got you covered! It is common here to take a nice nap after lunch – so eating at home is just perfect! Whether you will enjoy being a culinary master, or chose to ask your personal chef to make something for you, here are some tips on eating like the locals and finding good ingredients and good places to gather them from.
The everyday food of local Costa Ricans is quite interesting. Common foods are such things as delicious soups and stews that incorporate vegetables, black bean and rice dishes, rice and chicken or shrimp dishes, fried plantains, and an array of delicious and exotic fruits you may not have tried before. Stay tuned for a future blog on the fruits of Costa Rica, and ideas of how to enjoy them!
Manuel Antonio and nearby Quepos ( just about 10 minutes away) have a variety of grocery stores and markets. In Manuel Antonio, we have Super Joseth market, and in Quepos, are Supermas and Pali. Supermas has a relatively nice selection of wines – many Argentinean and Chilean. There is even a Farmers Market on Saturdays in Quepos that runs along the waterfront. It is fun and beautiful. Just ask us for directions to any of these markets and we are happy to help. You can be sure that food can be found here!
One special treat near your rental is Villa Vanilla Spice Plantation, where you can experience “Flavors of the World”. Villa Vanilla is a working spice farm that creates organic spices, essential oils, and more. If you visit the plantation for a tour, you can experience beautiful sites and views while tasting and smelling the items they grow on their property . They also offer nice detailed and historical information and tours explaining spices and how they go about creating them. Students and researchers from many countries come here, and it has been called the “Best food tour on Costa Rica’s central Pacific coast!” You can taste and buy such spices as vanilla and ‘ceylon’ cinnamon and take home other treats. Be sure to grab some of their gourmet chocolates for your nice evening at home!
