All over the world, Easter is celebrated in Christian communities and Costa Rica is no exception. Semana Santa, also known as Easter Holy Week, is a tradition for Ticos (Costa Ricans) and they often head to the beach for some well deserved time off from work.
While in other countries Easter is only celebrated on the Sunday, in Costa Rica they celebrate all week long. They organize religious processions, festivals and parades. For both locals and tourists this is entertainment. While the locals have worked hard for weeks or even months on their preparations, tourists can stand on the sidelines and feast on the various religious tableaus that are paraded in the streets.
For others, Semana Santa is a time to head to the beach, our very own Manuel Antonio beach being especially popular. The clear blue water, the sun drenched sand and the lush vegetation offers the perfect setting to swim, snorkel, sail or just lay back and relax.
Tourists should note that public transportation is limited during the holy week, and our concierge at Manuel Antonio Vacation Rentals is happy to help you make arrangements for anything that you need during the week.
While many of the religious followers fast in the Holy week, especially on Good Friday, others enjoy homemade tamales and succulent seafood. Alcohol is traditionally not sold from Ash Wednesday until midnight on Good Friday.
If you’re planning on traveling to Costa Rica during Semana Santa, you’re in for an experience of a lifetime. Whether you enjoy the festivities or quiet time on Manuel Antonio beach, enjoy your time on our Rich Coast!
