March 8 is International Women’s Day, a day the women of Costa Rica embrace. Life is changing for these women. The men are no longer seen as the breadwinners, while the women do the cooking and the cleaning.
While many women in Costa Rica can be found in leadership roles, others have started their own business.
Mothers recognize women’s right in Costa Rica and place great emphasis on keeping their daughters in school. Girls no longer have to drop out to help their mothers around the house. They now get an education, or learn a trade, so they can set up their own business and be financially independent.
Banks support women’s right and some offer the “Banca Mujer”, a special program designed for women to make a success of the business of their choice and to assist them with financial and non-financial services.
According to at least one bank, there are in excess of 14,000 business women in Costa Rica, which is double the amount as in 2010.
