Manuel Antonio is a breathtaking region in Costa Rica. Because of our central location along the coast, taking a vacation here is a wonderful chance to combine the traditional sightseeing aspect of tourism with fun and celebrations of the local culture. One of the main reasons that tourists vacation in Manuel Antonio is the National Park but often they are unaware of the many festivals that are held locally throughout the year. Those who wish to explore and experience the real local side of Costa Rica should try to come during one of our many festivals, or “fiestas”.
Fiestas give our visitors at Manuel Antonio Rentals a truly wonderful and unique opportunity to meet with and to see the local people in their own regional environment. It is one way to have an unforgettable vacation in Costa Rica and to also experience and personally partake in the unique, colorful and cultural traditions of the friendly and fascinating Costa Rican people. This works both ways, for there is a very enjoyable encounter and unique cultural experience for the visiting tourist who has been attracted to the region and it also simultaneously contributes very heavily to the local economy.
Our Manuel Antonio Rentals are situated in luscious green and breathtaking jungle settings. Outside of the celebratory environment of the festivals themselves, there is also amazing wildlife and exotic flora to both see and photograph. There is a small town center to visit with shops and cafes and where you can find local handicrafts, which make for unique memoirs to purchase.
Manuel Antonio is centrally located near several fun festivals found in Costa Rica:
About a 2 ½ hour drive from Manuel Antonio, Palmares is the largest and most popular fiesta in all of Costa Rica. Celebrations begin in the second week of January with the lighting of the fairgrounds and a lantern parade. The tope, or horse parade, is the most majestic aspect of the fiesta with thousands of riders astride their most prized and beautiful steeds. There is also a rodeo and carnival atmosphere with rides, a variety of concerts, as well as displays of arts and crafts. The food is something not to be missed!
February: Quepos Rodeo and Fiesta
Quepos is the main town near our rental properties in Manuel Antonio. It is here that a yearly rodeo and fiesta is held, similar to Palmares but on a smaller scale. The fiesta lasts for many days and there is a tope, music, dancing and carnival rides.
Envision Festival is held in Dominical, approximately 45 minutes south from Manuel Antonio Rentals. A large affair, it is an enchanting spiritual and eco friendly event which is held annually. It aims to promote sustainable living, knowledge of and connection with nature and spirituality. It also features local culture and promotes local music and dance, as well as wonderful arts and crafts made by artisans from around the country.
September: Whale Festival in Uvita
Uvita is about 1 hour’s drive from Manuel Antonio. This is the start of whale season and seeing marine mammals (and learning about them) is the primary objective of the festival. There are special boat tours which offer great views of these wild animals and our tropical coastline. A carnival with many varied activities takes place simultaneously involving local people. This is a great event for children.
October 30: Aguirre county celebration
Aguirre is a county in Costa Rica and its Capital is Quepos. October 30th is considered the “birthday” of Aguirre and in Quepos and an all day celebration is held. The fiestas begin at 8 a.m. and go until 10 p.m. You can see local artisans as well as traditional games being played. In the evening, enjoy live music and join in the fun of dancing in the streets and celebrating with the Ticos!
